Lake Como has drawn romantics for centuries — from the poets of the Grand Tour to George Clooney, who chose the village of Laglio as his home. Nestled between the Alps and Milan, this dramatic Y-shaped lake is today one of the most sought-after destination wedding locations in the world, offering couples a rare combination of natural grandeur, historic architecture and Italian elegance.

As a Lake Como wedding photographer, I’ve had the privilege of working at nearly every major venue on the lake — from the iconic terraces of Villa del Balbianello in Lenno to the Belle Époque splendor of Grand Hotel Tremezzo, from intimate ceremonies at Villa Pliniana in Torno to grand celebrations at Villa Erba in Cernobbio.

Wedding Venues on Lake Como

The lake offers an extraordinary variety of wedding venues, each with its own character. The western shore — Cernobbio, Lenno, Tremezzo, Moltrasio — is home to legendary properties like Villa d’Este, Villa Balbiano (featured in House of Gucci), Passalacqua (World’s Best Hotel 2023) and Villa Pizzo, where John Legend and Chrissy Teigen celebrated their wedding.

On the eastern shore, Varenna’s Villa Monastero and the secluded Villa Pliniana in Torno offer a more intimate atmosphere, while Bellagio — at the tip of the peninsula where the three branches of the lake meet — provides the quintessential Como experience, with Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni as its crown jewel.

Whether you’re planning a 30-guest ceremony in a private garden or a 300-guest celebration in a lakeside ballroom, Lake Como has your perfect setting.

Arriving by Riva Boat

One of the most cinematic moments I photograph is a couple’s arrival by classic wooden Riva boat. The gentle splash of water, the reflection of centuries-old villas on the calm surface, the Alps rising in the background — these are the images that make Lake Como weddings truly unforgettable. Many venues, including Villa del Balbianello and Villa Pliniana, are accessible only by boat, making the arrival itself part of the story.

The Lake Como Light

Photographers speak reverently about the light on Lake Como. The way it plays across the water during golden hour, how it filters through villa gardens in Tremezzo, the dramatic interplay of sun and mountain shadow over Bellagio — it creates a quality of light I haven’t found anywhere else in Italy. This is why I return to photograph weddings here year after year, always discovering new perspectives.

Your Destination Wedding in Lake Como

Every couple who chooses Lake Como becomes part of a centuries-long tradition of romance — from Napoleon and Josephine at Villa Sola Cabiati to today’s international couples drawn by the same irresistible charm. Just one hour from Milan Malpensa airport and surrounded by world-class hotels, the lake makes destination wedding planning remarkably seamless for guests traveling from around the world.

I consider it a privilege to document these stories, capturing not just the events of the day but the essence of why couples fall in love with this extraordinary destination.

Frequently Asked Questions

The best months for a Lake Como wedding are May through October. June and September offer warm weather with fewer crowds than peak July-August. Spring brings blooming gardens at Villa Carlotta and Villa Monastero, while early autumn offers golden light and harvest season. Some couples also choose winter for intimate celebrations with snow-capped Alps as a backdrop.
Lake Como wedding costs vary widely depending on the venue. Exclusive villas like Villa Balbianello or Passalacqua can range from €15,000 to €50,000+ for venue hire alone. A complete destination wedding at Lake Como, including venue, catering, flowers, and photography, typically ranges from €40,000 to €150,000+. Intimate elopements can be organized from around €5,000-10,000.
Lake Como is approximately 1 hour from Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP) and 45 minutes from Milan Bergamo Airport (BGY). Most couples arrange luxury transfers or private drivers for their guests. Once at the lake, private boats and water taxis are the most romantic way to travel between venues and hotels. Many lakeside villas are accessible only by boat.
Yes. Civil ceremonies can be performed at authorized venues and town halls around the lake, including Sala Stemmi in Varenna, Villa Carlotta in Tremezzo, and Villa Monastero. Catholic ceremonies are possible in local churches. For a legally binding wedding in Italy, non-residents need a Nulla Osta (no impediment certificate) from their embassy and must file paperwork at the local comune at least 2-4 days before the wedding.
Absolutely. Lake Como is one of Italy's most popular elopement destinations. Intimate ceremonies for just two with a photographer can be held at Villa del Balbianello, on a private Riva boat, or in smaller gardens along the shore. The combination of dramatic scenery, luxury hotels for an overnight stay, and easy access from Milan makes it ideal for couples seeking a romantic, fuss-free celebration.
For larger celebrations (150+ guests), Villa Erba in Cernobbio can host up to 400 guests, Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni in Bellagio offers grand ballrooms, and Grand Hotel Tremezzo has multiple event spaces. Villa d'Este in Cernobbio is another excellent choice for large, luxury weddings. Many couples also book a private boat fleet to transport guests between the ceremony and reception venues.
Lake Como offers an unmatched variety of photographic settings: the dramatic interplay of mountain and water, Renaissance villa gardens, classic Riva wooden boats, the warm golden light reflecting off the lake surface at sunset, and charming villages like Bellagio and Varenna. The Y-shaped lake creates unique perspectives from every angle, and the proximity of venues to the water means natural light is beautifully soft and flattering throughout the day.
