The Amalfi Coast has enchanted travelers for centuries — from the ancient Romans who built villas along these shores to Hollywood icons like Sophia Loren who called it home. This dramatic stretch of Campania coastline, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is today one of the world’s most coveted destination wedding locations, where vertical cliffs plunge into turquoise waters and pastel villages cling to impossible slopes.

As an Amalfi Coast wedding photographer, I’ve had the privilege of working at the coast’s most extraordinary venues — from the legendary Terrace of Infinity at Villa Cimbrone in Ravello to the candlelit elegance of Le Sirenuse in Positano, from the clifftop monastery of Monastero Santa Rosa in Conca dei Marini to the ancient grandeur of Hotel Caruso overlooking the entire coastline.

Wedding Venues on the Amalfi Coast

The coast offers a remarkable range of wedding venues spread across its most famous towns. Ravello, perched 350 meters above the sea, is the undisputed queen of Amalfi Coast weddings — home to Villa Cimbrone (where Greta Garbo famously eloped), Belmond Hotel Caruso, Palazzo Avino, Villa Rufolo (which inspired Wagner’s Parsifal) and the intimate Villa La Rondinaia, Gore Vidal’s home for over 30 years.

Positano, with its cascade of pastel buildings tumbling to the sea, offers a different kind of magic: the legendary Le Sirenuse, Villa Treville (once frequented by Maria Callas and Rudolf Nureyev), and intimate clifftop venues like Villa Magia and Hotel Marincanto. Further along the coast, Conca dei Marini is home to the exquisite Monastero Santa Rosa and the contemporary Borgo Santandrea, while Amalfi itself boasts the NH Collection Grand Hotel Convento — a 13th-century Capuchin monastery — and the refined Hotel Santa Caterina surrounded by terraced lemon groves.

Ravello: The Crown Jewel of the Amalfi Coast

Ravello deserves a chapter of its own. Perched 350 meters above sea level, this “city of music” offers perspectives found nowhere else on the coast — and I’ve dedicated a full guide to Ravello as a wedding destination, including its legendary venues like Villa Cimbrone, Hotel Caruso, and Palazzo Avino. If Ravello is on your shortlist, I invite you to explore that page for a deeper look.

The Positano Experience

Positano’s vertical landscape creates a visual drama that is impossible to replicate. The narrow stairways, hidden gardens, bougainvillea-draped terraces, and the views from every angle — each turn reveals a composition that seems designed for the camera. Some of my most memorable images have been captured in Positano’s labyrinth of steps and alleys, where the interplay of Mediterranean light and colorful architecture produces photographs of extraordinary beauty.

Coastal Journeys by Boat

Some of the most cinematic Amalfi Coast wedding moments happen on the water. A dramatic boat arrival at Positano’s beach, a private cruise past Praiano and the Faraglioni of Capri during golden hour, an intimate dinner on a secluded beach — the sea is as much a part of an Amalfi Coast wedding as the cliffs themselves. The coastline, viewed from the water, reveals a perspective of beauty that has drawn artists and lovers for millennia.

Your Destination Wedding on the Amalfi Coast

The Amalfi Coast is remarkably accessible for an international destination wedding. Naples International Airport is just 60–90 minutes away, and the Salerno Costa d’Amalfi airport offers an even closer gateway. Whether you envision an intimate elopement on a clifftop terrace in Ravello or a grand celebration in a Positano palazzo, the coast’s legendary hospitality, world-class cuisine and incomparable scenery make every wedding here unforgettable.

I consider it a privilege to photograph weddings along this extraordinary coastline, capturing the way Mediterranean light plays on ancient stone, the dramatic silhouettes against the sea, and the joy of couples who have chosen one of the most beautiful places on earth to begin their story together.

Frequently Asked Questions

The best months are May, June, September, and early October. These periods offer warm weather (22-28°C), clear Mediterranean skies, and comfortable evenings for outdoor dining. July and August are hot and crowded, with peak tourism along the coast. April can be beautiful but slightly unpredictable. September is considered the sweet spot: warm seas, golden light, and the tail end of summer energy without the peak crowds.
Amalfi Coast weddings are among the most prestigious in Italy. Venue hire at top properties like Villa Cimbrone or Belmond Hotel Caruso ranges from €15,000 to €50,000+. A complete destination wedding, including venue, catering, flowers, music, and photography, typically costs between €50,000 and €180,000+. Intimate elopements on clifftop terraces or private boat celebrations can be organized from around €5,000-12,000.
Naples International Airport (NAP) is the nearest major airport, approximately 60-90 minutes from Ravello or Positano by private transfer. The Salerno Costa d'Amalfi Airport (QSR) offers a closer alternative with selected European routes. Many couples arrange private boats from Naples or Salerno directly to Positano or Amalfi. Note that the coastal road (SS163) is famously narrow and winding — private minibuses or boat transfers are recommended over large coaches.
Yes. Civil ceremonies can be performed at authorized town halls in Ravello, Positano, Amalfi, and other coastal towns. The Ravello Town Hall is particularly popular. Some venues are also authorized for civil ceremonies. Catholic weddings can be celebrated in the coast's beautiful churches, including the historic Cathedral of Amalfi. Non-EU couples need a Nulla Osta from their embassy and must complete paperwork at the local comune.
The Amalfi Coast is a dream elopement destination. Ravello, perched 350 meters above the sea, offers some of the most dramatic ceremony settings in the world — including the Terrace of Infinity at Villa Cimbrone. Couples can also elope on a private boat along the coast, on a cliffside terrace in Positano, or in a hidden garden overlooking the Mediterranean. The combination of vertical landscapes, sea views, and Mediterranean light creates unforgettable elopement photographs.
Each town has its own character. Ravello is perched high above the coast, offering panoramic sea views and a serene atmosphere — ideal for elegant, grand weddings at villas and palazzos. Positano is a vibrant, fashionable beach town with a vertical landscape of colorful buildings — perfect for lively, glamorous celebrations. Amalfi is the historic heart of the coast with its medieval cathedral and maritime heritage — great for couples wanting authentic Italian charm and a more accessible location.
The Amalfi Coast's dramatic vertical landscape creates photographic opportunities unlike anywhere else in Italy. Cliffs plunging into turquoise waters, pastel villages cascading down mountainsides, terraced lemon groves, and the infinite Mediterranean horizon provide a constantly changing backdrop. The coast's orientation means beautiful light throughout the day, with particularly stunning golden hour conditions in Ravello and Positano. Boat sessions along the coast at sunset are among the most cinematic images I create.
